Good morning! Yesterday House Republicans passed the SAVE act. The SAVE Act would:
- bar active duty military and citizens abroad from voting by ending mail-in and online ballots
- enact broad purges of voter rolls and force voters to prove their citizenship when registering
- give each of the 50 states the discretion to create rules for “additional documentation” to resolve a discrepancy in documents showing proof of citizenship.
Most Americans do not have a REAL-ID compliant driver’s license, and 64% of Americans do not have a valid passport. As a result, many women and trans people seeking to register or re-register will need to rely on birth certificates that do not match their married surname.
We need to call our Democratic Senators and tell them to BE LIKE CORY BOOKER—FILIBUSTER!
Find your Senator here and call: https://www.senate.gov/senators/senators-contact.htm
Script:
Hi, I’m a constituent calling from (Zip Code). My name is ______.
I understand that the House just passed the SAVE Act. I am deeply opposed to this bill. It will disenfranchise tens of millions of American citizens with no access to a birth certificate or passport, and 69 million married women who took their husband’s last names. Please use the filibuster to halt passage of this act. At the very least, I demand that the Senator vote no on this bill.
I hope you had some fun while protesting last Saturday. The more we gather together the braver we become as resisters. Let’s all be like Cory Booker! Betty
And now the music:
John Cage was known as the “enfant terrible” of modern music, composing pieces that used the inside of the piano and stretched the audience’s ears. His most famous and controversial piece is most likely 4’33”, a composition of silence. Like what is happening in politics today, silence can be deafening.
