Good morning! The Senate and Congress will recess for Memorial Day weekend on Friday and will return June 1st. This is a good opportunity for them to hear from their constituents. And what an earful we could give them. Call the local office of your Representative and make their Memorial Day weekend a memorable one. Here are some possible scripts:
Donald Trump is stealing 1.8 billion dollars of our taxpayer money to pay himself and his cronies. This is blatant corruption. Congress needs to use whatever tools it has at its disposal to stop it. What is Congressmember (Name) going to do?
A group of Democratic representatives, including Reps. Delia Ramirez and Analilia Mejia, introduced the Living Wage for All act, a bill that would gradually raise the federal minimum wage to $25 an hour. I want Congressmember (Name) to support it.
Senator Tim Kaine (D-Virginia) led the Senate in introducing the resolution to direct the president to “remove the United States Armed Forces from hostilities within or against Iran, unless explicitly authorized by a declaration of war or a specific authorization for use of military force.” After seven failed attempts the eighth passed for the first time. Now it moves on to Congress. Although DJT will veto it if passed by Congress, we cannot lie down while our armed forces are putting their lives at risk for a fake war. Ask your Congressmember how they will vote on the War Powers Resolution.
We have enough war veterans. Let’s hope there won’t be more American patriots to memorialize this upcoming long weekend.
Betty
And now the music:
Gustav Holst wrote The Planets between 1914 and 1916. Each planet owes its characterization more to astrology than astronomy. The second movement, “Venus, the Bringer of Peace” embodies the goddess’ spirit with relaxing melodies, shimmering strings, and a solo violin passage that evokes the desire for beauty and peace.
