Most publications look for a timely connection and an edge when accepting a piece, something that is often the generator of my essays. But every once in awhile, there is a piece that you have to write simply because it’s what you feel, no matter the correlation to current events, no matter the need for a buildup of tension and a resolution. This is that piece. There aren’t many publications that accept lyrical essays but I have been fortunate that “A Map of Marriage on Monhegan Island” has found a home, not once, but twice, first in Persimmon Tree in the fall of 2022, and now in the December 2024 issue of WordSwell. I hope you enjoy it!
